Duck Season Opening Weekend Checklist
Nov 01, 2026
Opening weekend of duck season comes fast, and nothing ruins a morning in the blind like realizing the shells are still in the truck. Here's the checklist we run through before every opener, plus what we wear when the ducks are flying.
Before you leave the house
- Hunting license, migratory bird endorsement, HIP certification and federal duck stamp. Check the current Texas Parks and Wildlife season dates and rules for your zone.
- Non-toxic shells, and more than you think you'll need
- Shotgun, choke tube and wrench, cleaned and checked
- Waders or knee boots, checked for leaks
- Decoys, weights and lines, untangled the night before
- Calls on a lanyard
- Headlamp and spare batteries
- Blind bag: knife, shell pouch, gloves, face mask or paint, hand warmers, snacks and a thermos of coffee
- Dog gear: vest, water, bowl and a towel for the ride home
Dress in layers
Texas duck mornings can start near freezing and end warm by mid-morning. Layer so you can shed as the sun comes up. A breathable base, a warm middle layer and something waterproof on top covers most days.
What we wear in the blind
- Mallard Run Tee: three mallards mid-flight, made for the blind and the breakfast after.
- Duck Dog Tee: for anyone whose retriever is the real hunter in the family.
- Creek Flyer Rope Hat: our duck design on a green snapback.
- Creekside Camo Hoodie: a light layer for early teal season and warm afternoons.
Or grab the Duck Season Combo, the Mallard Run Tee and Creek Flyer Hat together for $49.
Bring the kids
Some of our best days in the blind are the ones with the kids along. Every Range Creek tee comes in youth sizes, so the next generation can match. Shop Like Father, Like Son.
After the hunt
Clean your gun, dry your waders inside out, and get the decoys stacked before you crash. Next weekend comes quick.
